How Hail Affects Shingle Roofs

Typically hail damage can be seen on shingles as indentations or fractures on the shingle’s surface. Sometimes it’s not as obvious and goes unnoticed, causing premature aging of your shingles. There are multiple things hail can do to damage your shingles:

  • Granule Loss – The granules on your shingle’s surface are an integral part of the shingle and the shingles first line of defense. When you lose these granules the asphalt surfacing becomes exposed to the elements, causing premature aging.
  • Cracks in the asphalt surfacing – Below your granules is an asphalt surface. If the asphalt surfacing layer cracks, water can get under it.
  • Exposed / Fractured fiberglass mat – The fiberglass mat is your last layer of protection the shingle provides.
  • Loosening of the self-seal strip – Shingles have strips that join them all together. They’re stronger together, but when they start loosening they can blow off and leave your roof vulnerable to the elements.
